See you in the Funny Pages: “My Favorite Thing is Monsters”

September 11, 2017

My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris is a literary comics masterpiece – and I don’t say that lightly. Set in seedy 1960s Chicago, ten-year-old Karen Reyes imagines herself as a werewolf…not fitting in with her peers, but part of an imperfect, loving family consisting of her single mother and protective brother. When her neighbor, Anka, dies from a gunshot wound, Karen investigates and uncovers the adult world of monstrous people both good and bad, tough decisions, and survival in unrelenting environments. Beyond the mystery, Karen will discover her own sexual identity, family secrets, Anka’s tragic past, and larger societal tensions. Conceived as Karen’s graphic diary, the book is intimately drawn on lined notebook paper. Her artwork celebrates everything from the “high” artwork of the Art Institute of Chicago to the “low” art of mid-century horror comics in meticulously crosshatched drawings. This book is an artistic tour de force and has received wide acclaim within and outside the comics community. Look for it to be included in lists for the best books of 2017. Due to content, this book is for adult readers. The concluding volume will be out in March 2018.
