Rez Life: An Indian Journey through Reservation Life – David Treuer
The story begins as the author visits his reservation on Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. It includes loss and despair. His grandfather dies of a drug overdose and a young girl is raped and murdered. But, the storyline is far more than a collection of horror stories. It is a tour de force for those interested in key pieces of federal policy that created reservations and their famously poor conditions. Treuer brings in other voices to solidify his arguments:
– his mother as a tribal court judge
– his father and his time working for the federal government
– a tribal police officer at Red Lake Reservation as well as others.
The author pressed for the importance of language revitalization including immersion school for the Ojibwe; the beauty of reservation life exists; and will commit only if Native people commit to language preservation. Overall, this is an absorbing non-fiction read.
