The next steps

Ed Worso, GCPL Director

With the election results certified, perhaps some of you are asking the same question that many of us, the library staff, are asking: What’s next?

Acquisition of the funding
The Library will issue a bank qualified short-term note before year-end 2017. By delineating a portion of the $24 million as bank qualified, the Library could save over $1.5 million in interest over the life of the issue depending on the market. Issuing the $10 million in short-term notes by year-end 2017 is the only definitive part of our overall plan. The Library is still considering its many financing options as it prepares to enter the market in early 2018.

Planning and design
The library has created a selection committee that has spent weeks reviewing qualifications submitted by architect & design firms as well as construction managers at risk. The committee selected a shortlist of construction managers at risk and plans to complete the shortlist selection of architect & design firms in January 2018. Once we have a design firm selected and confirmed, we will move on to our shortlist of construction managers at risk. CMRs will submit proposals that coordinate with the design firm and the selection committee will evaluate to select our preferred team of design firm plus construction manager at risk. After all of this is completed, we can move toward the big step of building.

Site selection for Bainbridge has been established as the GCPL board purchased adjacent property in 2014. Land acquisition for Thompson is still in the investigation phase but we hope to have this finalized in the early weeks of 2018. All other aspects of building construction and renovation will be hashed out in conjunction with the design firm and the construction manager at risk once selected.
It’s an exciting time with a great deal of work ahead of us. We look forward to talking to community members through the whole process and I will keep you posted on this blog as well. As always, please send me your questions and I will work to answer them here.

Wishing you and yours a safe, warm holiday season!
