The House with the Clock in its Walls by John Bellairs
The character of ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt is immediately relatable for younger readers, and his adventures are scary with just the right amount of silliness to take the edge off. This book has been a favorite of mine for many years. There’s a movie on the way, but be sure to read the story first!

Be Brave, Little Penguin by Giles Andreae
I used this for my most recent story time, and my kids loved it. This is the story of a little penguin who is afraid of the water. The rhymes are catchy and the illustrations very colorful. I enjoyed the message of the story which was that we all have certain fears, but sometimes you just have to be brave and take a leap of faith.
