Orphan Train Girl by Christina Baker Kline
This book is a young reader’s edition of the Orphan Train by the same author. Twelve-year-old Molly is doing community service after having tried to steal a book from the local library. She is helping Vivian, an elderly lady, clean out her attic. As they go through the accumulation of items in the attic, Vivian begins to relate her story of being an orphan and the struggles she had to encounter as one of the children who was forced to ride the orphan train. Molly and Vivian form a friendship that is like no other.
This is a great condensed version of the adult book and is a great version for “J” readers. Christina Baker Kline has added fiction to fact and has created a book well worth the read. This would be a good book for young readers who are interested in historical facts with a bit of fiction mixed in.
