Reading this enchanting book was like travelling back in time to a sleepy village in rural Ireland. It is narrated by Noe Crowe, looking back as an old man on his youth while living with his grandparents in Faha. Then along comes an older man, Christy, sent to help bring electricity to a village that has not seen change for centuries. He also has another reason for coming to the village, which I will not divulge here. I found that reading the book required some patience and attention, but in doing so I was richly rewarded. I have never read a book in which I copied down so many quotes and passages about the human condition, music, birdsong and the like. It was nostalgic and melancholy, but at the same time full of wit and charm, bringing a smile along with a tear to my eye. Discovering this new author was indeed happiness for me and I look forward to reading his History of Rain next.
