Staff Book Review: Lamentation by CJ Sansom

August 20, 2020

Review: 'Lamentation,' By C.J. Sansom : NPRThis book review of Lamentation was written by Nancy from our Bainbridge Branch. Find all Staff Book Reviews here.

I just finished the sixth book in the Matthew Shardlake series titled Lamentation and I am already lamenting that I am one book away from finishing the series (but hold out hopes that Sansom will continue it)! The story takes place in 16th century London during the last days of Henry VIII, a volatile time marked by a struggle between the old Catholic faith and the Protestant reformers. Matthew Shardlake is a prominent lawyer assigned to find a missing manuscript written by the king’s sixth wife, Queen Katherine Parr, who is in the reformist camp. Sansom is such an exceptional writer whose vast research and attention to detail makes the reader feel as though they are back in that era, experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of medieval London. There is great suspense and also fascinating insights into court intrigue. Shardlake is a very compelling and sympathetic character. The Shardlake series is by far my favorite historical mystery series, and I highly recommend all his books. Best to read in sequence, starting with Dissolution.
