Resource Spotlight: Using to Learn New Skills

Jenna is an undergraduate student at Kent State University majoring in Advertising. She is interning with the GCPL Marketing Department as part of her major.

As an advertising student at Kent State University I’m always trying to learn new skills that I can take with me into my future career. For one of my classes, my professor wanted us to design a billboard for our client. At this point in time, I knew very little about graphic design and naturally was feeling pretty nervous heading into the assignment . Luckily, my professor suggested we check out, an online learning platform that teaches anyone business, software, technology, and creative skills. All library cardholders in the state of Ohio get access to for free! You can find the link on the GCPL resource page. I found that there were tons of courses on Adobe Illustrator, the program I eventually used to complete my assignment. I was skeptical because Illustrator sounds like something only graphic design professionals know how to use, but the courses on Lynda are targeted to beginners, so they walk you through the program step by step. I was amazed at how simple and approachable the courses on Lynda were. They break the courses down into sections, so you’re free to skip around to find what you need. The course I did even included exercise files that you could download onto your computer, so that you could follow along with the instructor. After just a couple days of following the courses I was already proficient in Adobe Illustrator and able to design a billboard for my assignment. This is a skill that I’ve been able to use in many classes; as well as, something I have added to my resume. It’s never too late to learn a new skill that you can use to boost your career performance or even just to use in your personal life. There’s something for everyone to learn on and I encourage everyone to take a look at the classes on offer. The service is absolutely free and it can’t hurt to explore the lessons it offers. There are tons of helpful tools and you may be surprised with what you’re able to absorb in such a short period of time.
