It takes a village they say. Here at GCPL we are proud of our team. They contribute in various roles to keep library operations smoothly rolling along. They are valued members of the community. The #MeetGCPL blog highlights a library team member and lets you get to know them a little bit more, so when you see them at your local Branch you can connect further.
For this #MeetGCPL we would like to introduce you to Kat who was born in Lake County, but grew up in Geauga County. Kat works as a shelver at our Bainbridge Branch.
– Favorite Place to vacation:
Kauai, particularly Koloa Landing – there is something clean and energetic about Hawaii. It’s beautiful, relaxing. There is something about being on an island in the middle of the ocean that cleanses and heals like nothing else. I don’t do a lot of running. Most of my vacay is walking at dawn on the beach, sitting and watching the sunset at the ocean, and walking to get a Puka dog. I would like to go to Maui, and do the Haleakalea sunrise hike one day. I keep missing whale watching season. I go a month too early.
– Her opinion on free time:
Free time?? Do people have free time??
– Favorite books:
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. It made her laugh. She also loves Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie.
– Something she would like to learn how to do:
Although highly unlikely in this lifetime, she would love to learn to do the dancing/figure skating. Learning to skate at age 4 with a pillow tied to her middle back on the pond in the woods started an itch that only partially got scratched. She did roller dancing in high school.
– Fur baby:
A 19-year-old cat named Alejandro. He was a 10-month-old stray that adopted her when she lived in Sacramento, and they are bonded as buddies for life.
– Something she believes everyone should do once in their life:
Do something adventurous that you don’t think you can do. For her it was skydiving – twice. The first time was terrifying, not being able to breathe, falling out of the sky, thinking: what if my shute doesn’t open? The second time was GREAT! A “safe” shake up is good for you – the sense of self-worth and accomplishment helps you grow.
– Her library story:
One year at the Maple Festival long ago and far away (1980, she believes) the Geauga Lyric Guild put on a yearly melodrama at the Maple Festival in the lower level of the Chardon Library. That year she got to play the heroine of it called “Begone Begonia, or Out the Window She Shall Go!” In one of the performances, she was standing up on her desk, with a sign that said Miss Information, shrinking away from the villain who was threatening and shaking his cane at her. The hook part of the cane got caught in the neckline of her dress and it wouldn’t release – so they had a hilarious but awkward several minutes trying to remove it. It was very memorable for her.
– Favorite quote:
“KNOW YOURSELF.” Which is a version of Know Thyself from the first of 3 Delphic maxims inscribed at the Temple of Apollo in Greece.
