Meet GCPL: Thompson Branch Manager Kevin

August 4, 2021

It takes a village they say. Here at GCPL we are proud of our team. They contribute in various roles to keep library operations smoothly rolling along. They are valued members of the community. The #MeetGCPL blog highlights a library team member and lets you get to know them a little bit more, so when you see them at your local Branch you can connect further.

For this #MeetGCPL we would like to introduce you to Kevin, Manager of our Thompson Branch.

His Hometown:

I was born in Jackson, Michigan. I lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan for many years, moved to Detroit, Michigan for grad school, then moved to Ohio shortly before starting with GCPL.

His favorite place to vacation:

I enjoy vacationing off the beaten path, in places that don’t attract other vacationers or tourists. My family and I like to go places we have never been before, rent a cabin, and discover the outdoors.

How he spends free time:

I spend a fair amount of time staring at a screen or a book.

Favorite book series:

My favorites would be Lee Child’s Reacher series and Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. My all time favorite book is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

One thing he would love to learn how to do:

I would like to learn to play the piano or the guitar. I’ve always had a strong appreciation for popular music, and would love to try to write a song or two.

Fur/scale Baby:

We have a dog. Her name is Freda, and she is a Great Dane. We have two cats, Sawyer and Isabella, and a fish named Angel.

Something everyone should do at least once in their lives:

Everyone should swim in the ocean. It helps put things in perspective. It’s quite humbling.

His library story:

I remember visiting my small town public library on a Saturday afternoon. Downstairs in the basement they had a very small auditorium with those affixed curved wooden seats, the kind that fold up when you’re not sitting in them. They were showing John Carpenter’s The Thing. I was the only one in the room, and I have never been so terrified and thrilled in all my life.

Favorite quote?

“Make your choice, adventurous Stranger,

Strike the bell and bide the danger,

Or wonder, till it drives you mad,

What would have followed if you had.”

C. S. Lewis in The Magician’s Nephew
