#GCPLBuilds: Girl Scout Troop 70470 builds garden at Geauga West Branch

July 13, 2018

A few weeks back, three members of Girl Scout Troop 70470 started work on a gardening project at our Geauga West Branch. They, along with the help of some of their siblings and mothers, were working so hard on this wonderful project that we just had to cover it, making sure they get the recognition they deserve! Below is an interview with the three Girl Scouts, Emily B., Morgan P., and Isabel G., along with pictures of the project from start to finish. Thank you, all involved!

Geauga County Public Library: Can you explain the nature of this project? Why did you choose the Geauga West Branch?

Emily: The nature of this project was to create a well-used Silver Award. A Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouts and the requirements for this award is to have 50 hours of service/planning and to create your project with a few other Girl Scouts. We chose the Geauga West Branch because a large amount of people come to the library and we thought it would be a great place to show our garden locally.

Morgan: This project was done to earn our Silver Award for Girl Scouts. It allows us to give to the community in many different ways. The one we came up with was planting a garden at the Geauga West Library. Originally we were going to place it at a nursing home but not as many people would see it. The library is a great place were people visit or even drive by that allows us to share this garden with the community.

Isabel: We wanted to do something that everyone could see and enjoy. The library is a great place because it is on a main road so everyone who drives by can see it. You can also enjoy the garden from inside the library so you can enjoy the colors while reading or looking for books. We wanted to give back to the community through the joy of colors and a nice view.

GCPL: What is your favorite part of being a Girl Scout?

Emily: My favorite part about being a Girl Scout is that we go on new adventures and try new things even though we may be nervous. Also, another reason why I like Girl Scouts is that we are always there for each other.

Morgan: My favorite part about being a girl scout is bonding at events or camping with your friends.

Isabel: My favorite part of being a Girl Scout is that it is a way to give back to our community through projects, like this garden. Projects like these help make our community and world a better place.

GCPL: The summer reading theme for this year is “Libraries Rock.” Why do YOU think libraries rock?

Emily: I think libraries rock because you can check out any book you want for free. In addition, another reason why libraries rock is because libraries are the ideal place to get your homework done after school.

Morgan: Libraries rock because they offer easy access to free books, games, movies, in addition to being a quiet place to come after school to study of enjoy reading.

Isabel: I think libraries rock because you can borrow books and do not have to buy them. Libraries are also a place that you can study in and visit after school. They also provide a place were you can try new books.

GCPL: What book are you currently reading?

Emily: The book I am currently reading is called Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.

MorganThe Mark of The Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson.

Isabel: I am currently reading Down The Long Hills by Louis L’Amour and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
